The Vichy French were allies of Japan in Indochina who we backed after Dien Bien Phu.  FDR wanted them out. His policies forced France to yield Laos Independence to Prince Sihanouk.   His book was titled: My War with the CIA.

Ho Chi Minh was in opposition to Japan.   At Riverside Baptist Church, Martin Luther King, speaking for the section of the Civil Rights Movement who believe in Human Rights, started a mutiny with this speech sometimes called Beyond Vietnam:  http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/mlkatimetobreaksilence.htm

Had MLK, Ho Chi Minh and Prince Sihanouk become allies, the Human Rights movement in Burma known as the Saffron Revolution, made up of monks, would have created the most powerful worldwide peace movement ever known.

With JFK dead, LBJ got hold of the Draft Board.  None of the 18, 19, 20 year olds, nor the Vietnamese people were allowed to Vote.  The election that went to Ho Chi Minh was cancelled. From then on American authority usurped the Civil Rights Movement and changed the status of anyone who supported Human Rights to Conscientious Objection.
